Bucking trend, Greenhills’ computer science instruction on the rise

…and beyond. New this year, seventh and eighth graders take a technology related class as part of their rotation with health and physical education. Seventh graders learn about the circuitry, open source coding, altering code, introduced to programming robotics, and microprocessors on the physical side of computing. Eighth graders begin to take command of the computer, programming their own simple games and applications while being introduced to the fundamental ideas of computer science. In the upper school, Foundations of Computer Science – a one semester elective – has been added. In FCS, students begin to learn and apply the theories…

Sidewalk artist David Zinn ’86 on art: less mystery, more fun

…to consider ourselves mere “doodlers.” Part of his aim, when he draws on the street or sidewalk with commonly available materials, is to demystify and democratize both the creation and appreciation of art. Too many of us, he told students, binge on art in the museum, struggling to spend just the right amount of time in front of each piece, and racing from room to room in immense buildings as if we were expecting a test on the way out. Check out some of Zinn’s work at sluggoonthestreet.tumblr.com, instagram.com/davidzinn, or in stories like this one from The Ann Arbor News….

Freshmen Experience ‘Agricultural Revolution’ Firsthand

…would be planted on the same plot of land each year, depleting the soil of essential chemicals. Also, all-natural compost is used to enrich the soil, rather than artificial chemicals and pesticides (which could end up damaging the soil or the groundwater supply). The animals are nourished with feed that is optimal for their health, rather than the typical unhealthy-but-economical grain diet fed to livestock on conventional farms; and a special focus is given to heirloom (non-genetically-modified) varieties of plants. These practices are somewhat less sophisticated than conventional farming methods- in fact, they are closer to the primitive farming happening…

Greenhills family heads south for winter break—to Antarctica

Greenhills math teacher Barbara Rocci has a keen eye for adventure. So, after a trip to Spitsbergen in northern Norway proved rewarding, it seemed only natural to try her luck in the far south. Rocci, her husband Andrew Adams, and their son Sebastian—a Greenhills 6th-grader–headed to Antarctica over winter break. It’s summer there, of course, so they found temperatures of 4o degrees or so on the continent—a far cry from current temperatures in Michigan—along with a plentiful supply of penguins, seals, and icebergs. There was even an opportunity for beach time and camping. Click here to check out some of…

Greenhills frosh gathers nearly 81,000 signatures in water conservation drive

Nathan Koh and Yousef Emara present 50,000 signatures to the MDEQ. Greenhills ninth-grader Yousef Emara could have waited for the adults in Michigan to object to Nestle’s plan to nearly double the amount of water it pumps out of an aquifer in Osceola County to supply its bottled water plants. Instead, Yousef partnered with Nathan Koh, as part of their 8th grade Sustainability Action Project last school year, and launched an online petition in hopes of gathering 10,000 signatures opposing Nestle’s plans. “I was astounded to learn that … Nestle had pumped more than 3.4 billion gallons of water from…

First Life of the Mind Event to Address Global Attacks on Education

On Thursday, October 14, Human Rights Watch International senior researcher Bede Sheppard will be the featured speaker at Greenhills’ first 2010-11 Life of the Mind event: “Protecting Education from Attack.” Sheppard will address a growing international crisis: the increasing (and increasingly violent) attacks on students, teachers and educational facilities across the globe. The event is co-sponsored by A2Ethics.org, a local nonprofit ethics news-and-ideas website and nonpartisan events organization. “We are very honored that Bede Sheppard is coming to Ann Arbor,” says A2ethics.org founder Jeanine DeLay. “His investigations into attacks on education have been essential. His talk offers the opportunity to…

Advanced Research Students Unveil Professional Research Findings

Titanium alloy debris released by magnetically controlled growth rod treatment for scoliosis does not appear to have a negative effect on bone growth. Leptospirosis in Thailand follows a significant annual periodicity, with cases peaking during the rainy season of August and September. Organoids with mutated RING1 genes have more stem cells and fewer differentiated cells, which might explain why RING1 mutations can cause microcephaly. When cars make left turns, they slow to turning velocity but then speed up during their turn, which contrasts with the currently accepted turn speed profile. Computer programming and machine learning can come together to perform…

Visiting writer shares power of words

Poet, essayist, and novelist Kazim Ali spoke to students in four separate English classes Friday about language, literature, and how to approach learning about both. Both Upper School and Middle School students spent class time with Ali, who is participating in this year’s Greenhills Visiting Writer Program. The director of Oberlin’s creative writing program and an associate professor there, Ali will work with Greenhills students over the course of the year to help develop their understanding of words and their power. Once again, Senior Projects
wow Greenhills audiences

…here, stands as a template for Greenhills student journalists moving forward. Exploring Bharatanatyam: When you’ve been studying the Indian classical dance form Bharatanatyam for 14 years, it’s only natural to want to continue. So for her senior project Pallavi Prabhu traveled to Bangalore, India for advanced study in the art form, which combines swift, intricate movement, gestures, and expressions to convey tales and characters from Hindu mythology. For her Greenhills audience, she performed three pieces, first explaining the stories expressed in each dance. At age 14 Pallavi completed her arangetram, a combination solo performance and rite of passage that demonstrates…

Something old, something new

…friends—we have seen other areas of the school grow and develop over the years that reflect a maturing institution. Since you are reading this note, you obviously have found the new iteration of our website. Certainly a website isn’t in itself transformative, but it does represent the school’s desire to put its best foot forward. A larger but similarly focused project is the redesign of our front entrance. In the early fall, students and families will enter the building and walk into the all-school forum, what a wedding planner might call “something old, something new.” The forum reclaims what was…
