The Best Advice College Counselors Wish Students Would Take to Heart

…grade, students are developing their reading, writing, math, and critical thinking skills through their class work. Their brains are constantly developing. As this happens, they’re already doing “test prep.” “Even if you’re a math whiz, it doesn’t do you any good to be doing test prep and sitting for tests in ninth grade,” Ellsworth said. “Some schools don’t even accept tests taken before 11th grade. Carnegie Mellon, for instance, frowns on the practice.” At Greenhills, students take the PSAT in 10th grade, then the school offers a free ACT practice test over the winter. After those tests, students meet with…

2024-2025 Things to Know and Do

This year, new students, including all incoming 6th graders, are invited to set up their lockers during our New Student Student Orientation on August 28 from 6 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. Returning students can choose to drop their things off during normal school hours (Monday – Thursday, 9:00am – 3:00pm) before school starts, or on the first day of school. We’ve made these changes in order to broaden the timeframe students have to set up their lockers. Should families be unable to drop by our campus before the school year begins, students are welcome to bring their materials with them…

Learning styles … and substance

…(and include more references to general knowledge acquired in other disciplines) we really want to encourage them to bring the growth mindset to their work. Collaboration, dealing with mistakes, the ability to notice that an approach isn’t working: these are the hallmarks of students who believe that they can work their way into success at math. How much more empowering an idea than the thought that one is either born with the ability to “do math”—or not! Remembering Steve Jones ’76

Our community was shocked and saddened to learn of the death of long-time teacher and alum Stephen (Steve) Jones on May 6, just five months after his retirement from the school. Mr. Jones moved to Ann Arbor at the age of 4 when his father, The Rev. Gordon Jones became the rector of St. Andrews Church in Ann Arbor. He first crossed the threshold of Greenhills School in September 1971 as a hesitant eighth grader. He previously recalled that the school took some getting used to not only because the dress code required that he wear a coat and tie,…

Testing the test: Greenhills helps develop new Character Skills Assessment

This year, students and prospective students at Greenhills are continuing to lead the way in helping the Enrollment Management Association learn about its new method of assessing character traits like empathy, teamwork, and integrity. The EMA approached Greenhills last year about beta testing a new Character Skills Assessment, a tool that will help admission officers understand more about the unique contributions applicants might make to their school communities. The assessment is designed to measure values and character in action, and each is part of what independent schools are looking for in potential students. Greenhills is one of only 45 schools…

Greenhills among 45 schools testing new character assessment tool

…unique contributions applicants might make to the Greenhills community. In past years, the SSATB has administered tests that measure academic aptitude, and schools across the country like ours use those tests as part of the application process. But there is much more to an application than simply academic achievement—or even academic potential. This new companion assessment, the CSA, hopes to gauge those values and character traits that we’re looking for in prospective Greenhills students. Participation is optional, of course, and in the next week all currently enrolled 6th through 10th graders will be invited to take the 30-minute assessment online…

AP Calculus: What Happens after the Test?

The Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, adjacent to the Kansas City Convention Center — where the AP Calculus Read is held — reminds every calculus student and teacher of Riemann Sums. For 14 of the past 17 years, I have spent a week during June living in an alternate reality: I grade AP Calculus tests. There were about 850 readers this year, including approximately 100 newbies (we call them “acorns”), table leaders, question and exam leaders, and one Chief Reader. Half of us come from secondary schools and half from colleges, community colleges and universities. We come to Kansas…
