TOP-RANKED BOYS GOLF TEAM HEADING INTO POSTSEASON
As the Greenhills varsity boys golf team heads into the postseason, it does so ranked one of the best Division 3 teams in the state. Despite this, the team is striving to improve, using every practice and competition to become more consistent when it matters most.
“In golf the little things matter, and we’ve focused on them all season long,” said senior captain Max Shulman. “It gets us a couple of shots here and there, and they all add up. We’ve had a couple of tournaments where we were multiple shots better than our best tournaments last year, and that’s because of the work we’ve put into our technique.”
Shulman, who will go on to play at the College of Wooster next year, has always led by example. Even before his senior season began he was putting in the work and, as a result, his season average is an even par and he’s been at or near the top of every meet and tournament. He credits working on technique with his coaches for building his confidence and the resulting improvement in his game.
The Greenhills coaching team has been busy preparing the team for Michigan High School Athletic Association postseason play. For the Gryphons, that has meant working on their short game.
“When we play well it’s because of putting, and I don’t think we’ve reached our potential yet with the short game,” said Greenhills Head Coach Michael Karr, “We recently had a putting intervention and it has greatly improved in the last two or three tournaments.”
There is no clear front-runner in Division 3, but the Gryphons know they can be that team when they’re confident and playing well. Regionals are May 28 at the Washtenaw Golf Club, which is Greenhills home course, and the team hopes their knowledge of the course will give them an edge.
“Greenhills is certainly a top-three team,” added Karr. “We’re looking forward to regionals and I’m pretty confident we’ll be headed to the state finals. Winning states has been our goal all season long, and it’s within our reach if the team shows up and plays as well as I know it can.”
