GREENHILLS HIRES JASON PICKETT TO LEAD VARSITY BOYS BASKETBALL PROGRAM

After an extensive search, Greenhills has hired Jason Pickett as its next varsity boys basketball head coach. Pickett has more than 20 years of coaching experience, including varsity head coach and assistant coaching stints at Saline High School, Farmington Harrison High School, and Ypsilanti High School.

“We had some outstanding candidates, but Coach Pickett impressed with his experience, enthusiasm, and deep basketball knowledge,” said Tom Ward, Greenhills athletic director. “He has a thorough vision for Greenhills basketball—from the first-year sixth grader through the varsity starting lineup—and we are excited to have him as part of our program.”

Most recently, Pickett was the boys lead assistant varsity coach at Ypsilanti High, where he spent the past two seasons coaching with and mentoring a former protege in their first head coaching role. Feeling that he was leaving the overhauled Ypsilanti program on solid footing, and with his children off at college, Pickett decided the timing was right to return to the top seat and lead the Greenhills basketball program.

“I see so much potential at Greenhills and am excited to begin working with and developing these talented student-athletes,” said Pickett. “I strongly believe that, as an educator, my duty is to promote success through multiple lenses—athletics, education, and character—and Greenhills shares those values. Together, we are going to take the basketball program to new heights.”

Pickett is taking over a strong basketball program developed by coach Andrew Wright, who has been involved with the Greenhills girls and boys basketball programs since 1995, most recently as the varsity boys basketball team head coach. In those nearly three decades, he amassed more than 200 wins and guided teams to several district and conference championships.”

“We’re incredibly grateful for what Coach Wright has done for our student-athletes and the Greenhills basketball program,” said Peter B. Fayroian, head of school at Greenhills. “He understood our school, coached our players up and brought out the best in them.”

Though the boys basketball season doesn’t officially begin until the 2024-2025 winter season, Pickett and the rest of the Greenhills athletic department are already making preparations. Pickett will meet returning and aspiring Gryphon basketball players the week of June 3, 2024 and a summer schedule is forthcoming.

Pickett is a graduate of the University of Michigan, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology, and Wayne State University, where he earned his master of social work degree. He works in the Saline Area Schools district, where he has been a school social worker since 2000.
