Upper School play entertains the crowd

Friday was opening night for this year’s Upper School play, Bertolt Brecht’s “The Caucasian Chalk Circle.”

The play focuses on questions of good and evil, and ultimately on property, as the question of land ownership is raised by the members of two collective farms in a part of the Caucasus ravaged by World War II. As that dispute appears to be nearing settlement, the group learns that it is about to be entertained by a singer, who tells them an old story called The Chalk Circle—a story which parallels the biblical story of King Solomon settling a dispute between two mothers over a baby.

“The Caucasian Chalk Circle” wasdirected by Emily Wilson-Tobin, with technical direction by Laura Bird and costume design by Allida Warn. Original music for the production was written by Benjamin Cohen.
