Temporary royalty, thanks to Día de los Reyes
Though a week late, Spanish students in Elaine Moffat’s middle and high school classes had the opportunity this week to sample rosca de los reyes, a sweet bread made in the shape of a crown that commemorates Día de los Reyes: Three Kings Day.
Three Kings Day has a special place in many Spanish-speaking cultures, and helps mark the end of the holiday season. And there’s a special tradition associated with the crown-shaped loaf of sweet bread. A tiny baby or other small token is baked into it, and the person who receives the slice containing it is the king or queen of the fiesta and plans the activities for the day.
According to Señora Moffet, all of the students agreed that this years’ roscas were muy sabrosas.
