Students, teacher attend Local Food Summit

Two Greenhills students joined science teacher Brandon Groff last weekend at the 8th Annual Local Food Summit, held at Washtenaw Community College.

food with brandonGroff attended the summit with freshman Riley Noble and junior Jack Urquhart, who both have been active in Groff’s work to bring more awareness of local food issues to Greenhills students. Westside Farmer’s Market Manager Anne Reinhold, who has supported Greenhills students interested in local food, was also on hand.

The gathering brought  farmers, health professionals, business owners, and foodies of all kinds together for a day of food exploration.

This year’s theme was “Local Food for Everyone,” and the discussions covered ways to increase participation in the local food system. How, for example, can people of all income levels have access to food grown locally? Other topics included how local food producers can compete with large-scale factory farming operations and how to create ways to make locally grown food a viable option for more people.

Participants included Megan Deleeuw, founder of Hand Sown Farm in Manchester and Shane Bernardo, who coordinates outreach for Detroit’s Earthworks Urban Farm. Organizations on hand included the Washtenaw Food Policy Council, Argus Farm Shop, and ZingTrain. There was even a chance to participate in a local food story slam.

And, as you might expect, there were plenty of locally based breakfast, brunch, and snack options.
