Petrillo ’16 Wins Geography Bee Third Year in a Row
On January 12 eighth grader Matthew Petrillo won the first round of the National Geographic Geography Bee with the question: “Barrier islands help shelter a nature reserve on Apalachicola Bay, an arm of what large gulf?”
Petrillo correctly answered “Gulf of Mexico” to win the bee for the third year in a row; Juan Martin-Dyer ’16 was runner-up.
Petrillo now advances to the next level of competition, which is a written exam to determine state competitors. The national championship, with a first prize of a $25,000 college scholarship, will be held May 22-24 in Washington, D.C.
