Orchestras transcend eras, genres in spring concert

Greenhills music fans were treated to a wide-ranging concert by the school’s orchestras this week as students performed pieces ranging from “March of the Nutcracker” to “Mission Impossible.”

The orchestras, conducted by music teacher John Goodell, took on a variety of challenging melodies as well as difficult time signatures, like the one for “Mission Impossible,” which Goodell told the audience might well account for the music’s title.

The program began with the sixth, seventh, and eighth grade orchestras performing individually, followed by a combination of seventh and eighth graders, the All School Chamber Orchestra, and finally the Upper School Orchestra. Performing solos were violinist Oriana Gulvezan ’18 and cellist Nicholas Wu ’18. Works performed included the First Movement of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 1, Antonín Dvořák’s “Bohemian Dance,” and Handel’s “Hornpipe.”

A reception by the GPO’s Arts Support Organization followed the performance.
