Middle School Chess Team Wins Michigan Championship
On February 25, two Greenhills middle school chess teams participated in the 2012 Michigan Junior High Team Championships at Oakland University. The annual tournament, sanctioned by the Michigan Chess Association and U.S. Chess Federation, drew chess teams from both public and private schools around the state.
In the Championship Section, the Greenhills team with Justin Chen ’16, Joy Chen ’18, Julian Wellman ’17 andNaveen Fujii ’16 came in first to win the 2012 Michigan junior high team championship title. Justin and Julian both won an individual silver medal for board 1 and board 3, respectively.
In the Reserve Section, the team with Jamil Rehemtulla ’16,Vishnu Venkatesan ’16, Nabeel Rehemtulla ’17, andBenjamin Kovacs ’18 also played well. Vishnu and Benjamin won an individual silver medal for board 2 and board 4, respectively.
