Math Club takes first place

The Greenhills Math Club sent a team of five Upper School students to compete in the University of Michigan-Flint’s Math Field Day — and they didn’t come home empty-handed. It was the 21st consecutive year Greenhills  has competed in a day-long event including  individual and team events. The Greenhills team dominated the eight other schools in our division, winning first place handily and nearly sweeping the individual events.

The team was captained by Andrew Gitlin’ 14, and its victory was secured with several wins. Frank Fazekas ’15 took the Mad Hatter A  competition,  a rapid computation and reasoning contest in which problems are shown on a screen. Julian Wellman ’17 took Mad Hatter B, a similar competition limited to freshmen.  Tanwei Chen ’15 and Alex Reeves ’15 won in Leapfrog, in which students partner up to solve a series of eight problems from across the high school math curriculum.

Students interested in learning more about the competition should come to the Upper School Math Club, which meets during lunch hours every Tuesday in Mr. Friendly’s room.
