‘Mad About London’ Trip Explores England and Scotland

Just hours before celebrating American Independence, the Mad About London trip touched ground in Detroit following a nine-day expedition to England and Scotland. An intrepid group of 22 London trippers joined Mark Randolph, and his bonnie assistant Katie Rieder, on his fourth trip to the UK.

The tour began with the sights of London: the Tower of London, Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace (and the Changing of the Guard), St. James’ Park, Fortnum & Mason, Lilywhite’s, Covent Garden, the London Eye, Harrods, and Wimbledon, etc.

The group then headed north to Stratford-upon-Avon, Shakespeare’s birthplace and the home of the RSC (Royal Shakespeare Company) for an acting workshop with an RSC player and a spectacular (quite literally) performance of Julius Caesar.

Next stop, York, in the north country, for a tour of the impressive York Minster Cathedral and a walk on the medieval wall.
From Edinburgh the tour headed into the Highlands to experience one of the greenest and most dramatic landscapes in the world. The Highland road wound through Inverness, the Loch Ness (famed home of Nessie), Fort Augustus, Fort William, the Battlefield of Culloden and finally Glasgow before winging homeward.Travelling by train the MAL trippers arrived in Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland, for a chance to stroll the Royal Mile, explore the castle and test the groups’ collective nerve on a ghost tour.

“The highlight of the trip was just being able to immerse myself in a different culture and experience what another country has to offer,” says tripper Riley Mitchell ’15.
