‘Lucky’ 6th Grader Raises $750 for Safe House

'Lucky' 6th Grader Raises $750 for Safe HouseWhen Nikhil Deenadayalu ’19 delivered 60 sets of towels to Safe House last fall, he was the answer to the organization’s prayers.

“The day we came they had no towels left at all,” says Deenadayalu. “They said that they were praying for more. It made me feel happy that I could help so many people.”

To collect all those towels, Deenadayalu and his brother Sahil (a student at Emerson) threw a Halloween party, to which they invited 32 friends. They knew they wanted to make the party a charity fundraiser and ended up choosing Safe House in part because October is domestic violence awareness month. In the end, in additon to having a “great time” at the party, they collected more than $750 worth of towels and socks for the shelter.

“We definitely want to do it again next year,” states Deenadayalu, who says that their next event might benefit Mott’s Children’s Hospital.  “There are a lot of unlucky people out there, and I’m one of the lucky ones.  It makes me feel good to help those who need help.”

“It’s so wonderful to see a sixth-grader finding his passions and making a difference in the community,” says Greenhills service learning coordinator Alyssa Friendly.  “We are proud of Nikhil for his efforts and for being an inspiration to others.”
