Greenhills Welcomes Four Alumni to Board of Trustees
Four alumni will be returning to Greenhills to serve in a new capacity: Board of Trustees members. At its recent June meeting (and last of the 2011-12 school year), the board welcomed the following new members:
Kristina Glusac ’88, David Markel ’80, Raj Tirtha ’76 and Jonathan Zimmerman ’83. Each will serve two three-year terms starting July 1.
Kristina Glusac ‘88
Kristina Glusac is an architect and senior associate at Hobbs + Black Architects. Prior to moving back to Ann Arbor in 2004, she worked in Chicago and received her master’s in architecture from the University of Illinois at Chicago. She received her B.A. in mathematics with a minor in history of art from Sweet Briar College, Va. Kristina recently completed her second three-year term on the Ann Arbor Historic DistrictCommission and was inducted into the Rotary International Club of Ann Arbor.
David Markel ‘80
David C. Markel, M.D. is a reconstructive knee and hip specialist with a keen interest in advancing orthopaedic scholarship and research. He graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School where he also completed his internship and residency in orthopaedic surgery. During residency, he was granted an AO/ASIF Foundation International Trauma Fellowship in Germany. Dr. Markel has distinguished himself with leadership positions in state, regional and national capacities. He is past-president and current board member and 2nd Vice President for the Michigan Orthopaedic Society and is an Examiner for the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. He serves as chair of the DMC / Providence Orthopaedic Surgery Residency and directs their research efforts in the new Orthopaedic molecular biology laboratory at Providence Hospital. He maintains additional titles of Associate Clinical Professor, Wayne State University and Adjunct Clinical Professor, American University of the Carib bean School of Medicine. Dr. Markel has authored numerous publications on hip and knee arthroplasy and their basic science, book chapters, received national research funding, and regularly lectures at a national and international level.
Rajiva Tirtha ‘76
Dr. Rajiva Tirtha has been working in the Durand community for more than 25 years. Though he started his undergraduate career in chemical engineering at the University of Michigan, he completed his schooling when he graduated from the U-M School of Dentistry in 1983. While attending school, Dr. Tirtha had two of his research papers published in the International Journal of Dental Research. He was also published in the Journal of the American Dental Association and presented research at Student Research at the A.D.A. convention. Dr. Tirtha started his own private practice in 1983. In 1985 he opened a new practice called the Burton Dental Center in Burton, Mich. In 1986 he bought the Durand office and operated both offices until 2008 when he sold the Burton Dental Center. Dr. Tirtha was president of the Durand Rotary Club in 1993 and 1994 and was also the president of the Durand Chamber of Commerce in 1995 and 1996. He is also a member of the American Dental Association, Michigan Dental Association, and American Orthodontic Society. He also served as secretary of the Lake Shannon Sportsman’s Club in 2004.
Jonathan Zimmerman ‘83
Dr. Zimmerman earned a B.S. in physics from the University of Michigan, an M.B.A. from Carnegie-Mellon’s Tepper School of Business, and worked for Ford Motor Company for several years in their finance and business planning disciplines before changing career gears altogether. In 1994, he returned to the University of Michigan for medical school and Internal Medicine residency training. Subsequently, he joined the teaching faculty at Oakwood Hospital and Medical Center, became program director of Oakwood’s Internal Medicine residency program in 2003 and Internal Medicine Chair of Oakwood’s Physician Practice Division in 2009. He holds a Clinical Assistant Professor appointment with Wayne State University’s School of Medicine.
