Greenhills marks Day of the Dead in sweet style
Sure, it’s the season of Halloween. But for Greenhills Spanish students—and patrons of Ann Arbor’s Tios restaurant—it’s also Día de Muertos time.
Día de Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a Mexican holiday celebrated Nov. 1 and 2. In preparation, 7th Grade and Spanish IV and V students last week decorated sugar skulls, traditionally used in Mexico to decorate Day of the Dead altars.
The Greenhills sugar skulls will be displayed at Tios, an Ann Arbor Mexican restaurant, until Nov. 8.
“The altars honor and celebrate the memories of dead loved ones, and are very beautifully and lovingly prepared,” said Greenhills Spanish teacher Elaine Moffat. The skull decorations include brightly colored Royal icing, sequins, feathers, foil, and glitter.
“Our students get a huge kick out of decorating these skulls,” Moffat said. “We’re very fortunate to be able to make this an annual event.”
