Former GH Board President Howard Dubin a ‘Dedicated Leader’
The Greenhills community was saddened to hear that Dr. Howard Dubin, M.D., a retired professor of dermatology at the University of Michigan and one of Greenhills School’s most dedicated leaders, passed away on Sunday, October 16 due to complications from Parkinson’s Disease. Dr. Dubin served as a member of the Greenhills Board of Trustees from 1979-1985, and was board chair from 1981-84. He was also the husband of loyal Greenhills volunteer Patricia Dubin and the father of four Greenhills graduates: Doug ’82, Kathy ’83, Dave ’86, and Mike ’89.
Former Head of School Dave McDowell remembers Dr. Dubin as epitomizing “the very
best of what a trustee and a board president ought to be.” McDowell said that despite the fact that all four of Dr. Dubin’s children were Greenhills students during his board tenure, he had great respect for Dr. Dubin’s ability “without exception, to step back and see what was best for the school and to guide the
board toward decisions which were in the best long-term interest of the school.”
Dr. Dubin is also remembered for his commitment to upholding the unique Greenhills philosophy. He hoped that future leaders would remember that “this school was supposed to be a place where kids developed optimally. And they would not have developed the same way if they were elsewhere. That always has to be kept in mind.”
“The Greenhills community is fortunate to have had Dr. Dubin’s thoughtful leadership and is grateful to the Dubin family for their many years of involvement and support of Greenhills School,” says current of head of school Peter Fayroian.
Services for Dr. Dubin include visitation from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. on Sunday, October 23
at Muehlig’s Funeral Chapel and a funeral service on Monday, October 24 at 11 a.m. at First
Presbyterian Church of Ann Arbor with an hour of visitation immediately preceding the funeral
service. The burial service will immediately follow the funeral service. Also following the
funeral service, there will be a reception at the Ann Arbor City Club beginning at 12:30 p.m.
