‘Best Year’ of Fine Arts Awards Announced
Greenhills art photography students recently participated in the annual Scholastic Art and Writing Competition. Raissa Xie ’12 received two gold keys (the highest honor) and two silver keys for her photography submissions; Kara Krause ’11 received a certificate of merit.
According to fine arts department chair Rob Kinnaird, the Awards have an impressive legacy dating back to 1923 and a noteworthy roster of past winners including Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, Richard Avedon, Robert Redford and Joyce Carol Oates.
Potential! Exhibit
Twelve Greenhills upper school students are currently featured in Potential!, an annual juried exhibit sponsored by the Ann Arbor Art Center to showcase the work of Washtenaw County high school artists. This year an estimated 200 students from 11 schools submitted work for the coveted spots. The following students were juried into the exhibit running now through May 9: Kristy Kopystynki ’11, Sena Duran ’14, Raissa Xie ’12, Megan Sims ’13, Meredith Patrell-Fazio ’11, Maia Akiva ’11, Kristen Mikhail ’13, Kara Krause ‘11, Jakob Rodseth ’12, Joanna Lingenfelter ’11, Sin Jeong Lee ’12 and Emily Chung ’13.
Two students, Megan Sims ’13 and Meredith Patrell-Fazio ’11, received exhibit awards. Sims won the juror’s award for her photographic submission “Under Lock and Key,” for which she will receive a $250 scholarship to the Summer Art Institute at the Cranbrook Academy of Art. Meredith Patrell-Fazio’s “Dreaming of Neurcus” ceramic sculpture was selected as the best work in the 3D category. She will receive a $100 cash prize.
“This was the best year for Greenhills art students in more than 10 years,” says Kinnaird. “We are so proud of all our students.”
