Benefit concert to raise money for Detroit School of Music
On Saturday, the Class of 2013 is sponsoring a benefit concert to fund a $1,000 grant for The Detroit School of Music, an organization that provides music lessons for both children and adults.
The event, called Making Music: Ann Arbor to Detroit, will be held from 7-9 p.m. at Elmo’s Hideaway, a concert venue below Elmo’s T-shirt shop, located at 220 S. Main St. in downtown Ann Arbor. Eight local Ann Arbor music groups are slated to perform — half of which are Greenhills students and faculty.
According to the event’s organizers, seniors Christina Bartson (right) and Florence Rivkin (left), when the senior class voted back in the fall to support one of five different Detroit-related entrepreneurial grants, The Detroit School of Music’s appeal for eight portable pianos was a no-brainer.
“At least half of our class are musicians and into theater and the arts,” says Rivkin. “The opportunity to help provide pianos – instruments that will last for ages – to people who have had so many music and arts programs cut in their schools was an obvious choice.”
Bartson and Rivkin have been busy this past week promoting the event, including a radio interview Thursday morning (Jan. 10) with Ann Arbor 107.1’s Martin Bandyke. The girls have also been named “Persons of the Week” by Detroit 2020 of WXYZ Channel 7 Action News and will be featured in a segment that will air Friday (Jan. 11).
“It’s wonderful to have our peers volunteer to perform and become engaged in the revitalization of Detroit,” says Bartson. “We hope that everyone will bring their friends and family and come out Saturday to support Greenhills musicians, Ann Arbor musicians, and most importantly, The Detroit School of Music.”
Tickets for Making Music: Ann Arbor to Detroit are $7 and available at the door or in advance in the Main Office. Concessions (including popcorn donated by the Michigan Theater) will be available to purchase as well. All proceeds go to The Detroit School of Music.
