Alumna Melanie Weil’s Senior Project Lives on as The Agdao Project

For Greenhills seniors, Thursday night’s Senior Project presentations was the happy end of weeks of laborious research, hard work and late nights.

Alumna Melanie Weil's Senior Project Lives on as The Agdao ProjectThree years after her project was due, however, Melanie Weil ’08, is still working on hers.

For her senior project back in the Spring of 2008, Melanie Weil put on an elaborate fundraising event to support impoverished children in the Agdao district of Davao City in the Philippines whom she met there the summer before her senior year. The event included a traditional Philippine dinner, a silent auction featuring Philippine jewelry and art, and the donation of children’s clothing and school supplies. Melanie was able to raise over $5,000 which, through the help of a local church in Agdao, provided monthly installments of rice to about 200 families, as well as preschool uniforms, toys, and medical supplies.

That senior project is now The Agdao Project, a non-profit organization that continues to provide support for the health and education of children in the Philippines.

“Without the support of the Greenhills community, I could never have had such a successful beginning to The Agdao Project,” says Weil. “I hope that the projects of other Greenhills seniors will help them find something they really care about that will bring meaning to their lives well beyond high school.”
