6th Graders Host Empty Bowls Dinner for Food Gatherers

On May 23 the Class of 2018 hosted an Empty Bowls Dinner in the Greenhills dining room and raised $1,000 for local food bank Food Gatherers.

“This event was a natural link for students because they had learned about hunger in Washtenaw County and in the world this year through grade level service work and in their social studies classes,” says 6th grade social studies teacher Amanda Harper.

Everyone who attended the event was served a simple dinner of soup and bread. Guests also received a beautiful pottery bowl handcrafted by a student, which was meant to serve as a reminder of the many empty bowls in our community. The students made the bowls in their art classes under the guidance of teacher Nicole Burroughs.

“This event was a great way to combine both art and service in a meaningful way,” adds Harper.  “We look forward to the Empty Bowls Dinner becoming an annual event and having a real impact on the community.”

Next year’s Empty Bowls Dinner is set for March 7, 2013.
