Greenhills seniors are semifinalists for National Merit Scholarships

Six Greenhills seniors are among about 35 Ann Arbor students named semifinalists in this year’s National Merit Scholarship competition.

Across the nation, about 16,000 students became semifinalists, with roughly half of the students who make it to the semifinals going on to share National Merit Scholarships totaling $32 million.

The Greenhills semifinalists are:

  • Monica Choi
  • Naveen Fujii
  • Shea Sanvordenker
  • Vishal Tien
  • Sabrina Wu
  • Zoe Zimmerman

The competition began with about 1.5 million juniors at 22,000 high schools around the nation entering the program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying test. Those who become semifinalists are the top scorers in each state, with each state’s number of semifinalists proportional to the state’s percentage of total graduating seniors.

Those students who become finalists compete for three types of scholarships: a National Merit $2,500 Scholarships, awarded on a state representational basis; one of 1,000 corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarships, or about 4,500 college-sponsored Merit Scholarships.

Announcements of the winners will begin in April and run until July, 2014.
