Nine seniors named National Merit Scholar semifinalists

Nine Greenhills seniors have been named semifinalists in this year’s National Merit Scholarship competition — more than 12 percent of the class, and just under 10 percent of the total for all of Washtenaw County.

Across the nation, about 16,000 students were named as semifinalists. Roughly half of the students who make it to the semifinals will go on to share National Merit Scholarships totalling $35 million.

The Greenhills semifinalists are:

  • Sarah D. Gargaro
  • Benjamin Giampetroni
  • Andrew M. Gitlin
  • Brendan Kelley-Bukovac
  • Emmet C. Kulka
  • Francesca M. Lupia
  • Gustav B. Nordheilm
  • Zane Phillips
  • Antonia M. Piedmonte-Lang

The competition began with about 1.5 million juniors at 22,000 high schools entering the program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying test. Those who become semifinalists are the top scorers in each state, with each state’s number of semifinalists proportional to the state’s percentage of total graduating seniors.

Those students who become finalists compete for three types of scholarships: a National Merit $2,500 Scholarships, awarded on a state representational basis; one of 1,000 corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarships, or about 4,500 college-sponsored Merit Scholarships.

Announcements of the winners will begin in April and run until to July, 2014.
