Chinese team wins first middle school World Cup
During the week of May 13, middle school Chinese, French, Spanish and Latin students competed in Greenhills’ first-ever World Cup soccer tournament. After four days of competition, the Chinese team prevailed, capturing the gold medal.
Prior to the games, students spent days preparing with their language teachers in order to learn soccer vocabulary in the target language. No English was permitted during the games; in fact, the other team was automatically awarded a goal if the referees heard a player speak English.
“This event was a fantastic way for students to practice using foreign language in a fun, creative and authentic way,” said Spanish teacher Kevin Olson. “After the tournament ended, students begged for rematch opportunities, so we’ll definitely do it again next year.”
