For Greenhills students, learning doesn't stop at the classroom door. Whether they're bonding with classmates on an overnight trip to Canada, knocking down an abandoned building in a struggling neighborhood, or helping gather food and clothing for those less fortunate than themselves, our upper school students learn every day that understanding comes in many forms.
During the summer before their senior year, students have the opportunity to engage in a meaningful scientific research project with a university or private sector mentor. The research continues during the school year and culminates in a journal-worthy paper and presentation. Past projects have involved testing ancient shark teeth with the California Institute of Technology, deep brain stimulation with the University of Michigan Neuroscience Lab, and hands-free calling and text-messaging in cars with Ford Motor Company.
Each year students compete in award-winning science clubs. The National Science Bowl and National Ocean Sciences Bowl routinely return to Greenhills with victories. The upper school robotics team competes in the FIRST Robotics Challenge, which has its competition season from January to May. The team designs and fabricates a custom robot to tackle a new challenge every year, and works together with other teams to compete most effectively.
Seniors are released from classes three weeks before graduation to work on an in-depth final project that explores an outside-the-classroom topic. The project culminates in a public presentation. Past projects have ranged from converting a car to run on vegetable oil to writing a collection of French poetry.
Students are encouraged to participate in school life outside the classroom.
They learn to balance their extracurricular activities with their academic lives and often discover new interests and friendships that stay with them far beyond their years at Greenhills
Our students have the opportunity to participate in many extracurricular activities, including:
A variety of other clubs and groups – there’s something for everyone!
